The Haunted House | Victorian Temperance Book | 1862This scarce Victorian book combines two of my favorite subjects: Ghosts and the supernatural and the temperance movement. What is presented as a ghost story turns out to be a cautionary tale against the dangers of drink. Palmer Cox is perhaps best known for his “Brownies” books about little elf-like creatures but I presume the appeal of this one needs no explanation

but it was a very good marriage: The frame and tintype are contemporary to each other
